Human Resources
If you enjoy working with people and are looking for an office role, then human resources (HR), also known as personnel, could be for you. They look after the recruitment and developing of employees and also look after their welfare. Roles include: HR Administrator, HR Assistant, HR Advisor, HR
Manager.
What would I do?

Hiring staff – advertising and interviewing

Keeping employment records
-
Providing staff training and development
-
Dealing with discipline and grievance issues

Developing HR policies and procedures

Writing staff handbooks
-
Working with other managers to plan future staff needs

Promoting equality and health and safety

Keeping up to date with employment law practices

Skills needed
Your work would generally be office based. Some HR roles would require flexibility to be able to travel to other offices and work sites. General working hours are Monday to Friday, 35-40 hours per week.
What to expect
-
HR Assistants and Administrators can earn around £15,000 to £20,000 per year
-
A HR Manager can between £40,000 and £80,000 a year

Possible routes

Entry level requires GCSE English and Maths, good computer skills and previous experience of office work
-
Apprenticeship – you need to be 18 years old to start a HR Apprenticeship
-
You would need to be willing to work towards a qualification in human resource management, for example, those offered by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
-
You could also move into HR if you have a BTEC HNC/HND, degree or postgraduate qualification in human resource management
